Life Cycle Inventory Programme
The Life Cycle Inventory programme refers to the second phase of LCA and aims at increasing the access to and quality of LCI databases. What are the requirements for LCI databases and how can data be shared? The LCI programme improves global access to transparent, high quality life cycle data by hosting and facilitating expert groups whose work results in (web-based) information systems. According to the ToRs for the LCI definition study its specific aims are:
- To identify user needs for data, and needed/desired data characteristics
- To identify user needs for further LCI methodological guidance and consistency
- To increase the capacity for making, and judging/validating, LCIs globally
- To provide users of LCI data the broadest possible view of available LCI data options and the consequences of data selection for results quality and validity
- To develop and put into place mechanisms or processes which stimulate continuous improvement in data availability, quality, and transparency
The following Task Forces (TFs) have been established under the Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) Programme:
-
LCI Database Registry (TF LCI 1)
Task Force 1 is responsible for developing the UNEP/SETAC Database Registry: a comprehensive, web-based listing of available LCI databases for the world LCA community.
You can also visit the TF1 page on the
the WG LCI TF1 .
- LCI Database Characteristics and Quality (TF LCI 2)
You can also visit the TF2 page on the WG LCI TF2
- LCI Methodological Consistency (TF LCI 3)
You can also visit the TF3 page on the WG LCI TF3
- Library (TF LCI 4).
The aim is to sum up results of the many completed LCAs so as to give quick, reliable guidance to potential users, but also to house the reference material for the LCA community.
- LCI Databases and Capacity Building (TF LCI 5).
Task Force 5 is a practical one involving many regions (teams from novice and experts) and aiming i) practical involvement, ii) on the job training (training the trainers), iii) capacity building at universities, iv) operational "field tests" for TF2 and 3 and I/0 or hybrid LCI, v) assist in finding funding.
The first three Task Forces are orientated towards experience-sharing and guidance, while the last Task Force is practice and training-orientated supporting the capacity building efforts of the Life Cycle Initiative. The other proposed practice Task Force on LCA Case Study Library for Meta-Analyses (TF LCI 4) has not been launched yet, but preparatory work is going on.
